Roses, Lilacs and Violets by gpalmer Roses, Lilacs and Violets by gpalmer

Milda, the goddess of love, may be a 19th century addition to the Lithuanian pantheon. Her domain includes romantic love, friendship and freedom.

Lovely picture!

I miss the smell of lilacs in my family's yard--both the big sweet purple ones and the shyer white ones with a more subtle wine-like scent.

May I ask where the roses are in this picture? I grew up in an area with no natural roses, just a couple of imported garden varieties, so most of the world's roses are hard for me to recognize.

Thank you!
To answer your question: Her basket is full of 5-petaled roses!

They are the original form of the rose, before we bred them to have layers of petals and a compact shape. The "modern" rose wasn't developed until at least the 17th century, and this Milda is wearing ~12th century clothes, so I chose period-appropriate roses. Similar 5-petaled roses are used in heraldry.

There are still a bunch of 5-petaled varieties grown as "wild roses." They tend to look like this: www.americanmeadows.com/media/… and can be very pretty.
