Protector of the Fire by gpalmer Protector of the Fire by gpalmer
Gabija (also Gabieta or Gabeta) is a Lithuanian hearth goddess, specifically the spirit of fire. She acts as the protector of the house and may appear as a rooster, a red cat, or a stork. Unlike many other hearth goddesses, Gabija was seen as a stern goddess who might punish households that neglected the care of their fires. If angered, she was thought to burn down houses. In homes that treated their fires properly, covering them with ashes overnight, she was a strong protector, keeping the house from thieves and famine.

Gabija often appeared as a woman wearing red, and her proper offerings included a bowl of water, or bread and salt.
